What is a time bank?

For our time-stressed communities, time banking is a way for you to do the things you love in exchange for the things you don't. At its most basic level, Time banking is simply about spending an hour doing something for somebody in your community. That hour goes into the Time Bank as a Time Dollar. Then you have a Time dollar to spend on having someone doing something for you. It's a simple idea, but it has powerful ripple effects in building community connections.Time Banking is about local individuals helping each other out, one-on-one or with group projects. They help rebuild neighborhood networks and strengthen communities.

Who We Are

The Portland Family Time Bank was founded with an inspiration that all families in our neighborhoods would be able to connect in a meaningful way sharing time, talent and fun. Whether for the birth of a child, a long-over-due house project, a lonely grandmother in need of companionship, a desire to learn how to play guitar, sharing a meal, or for the satisfaction of sharing one's expertise, the Portland Family Time Bank is designed to provide a structure for a sustainable village life.

What Can I do?

We are a member-directed Time Bank. We invite you to share your talent, skill or service no matter how simple or professional. This includes a group of moms getting together to share carpooling kids to activities. It can also include services like child care, grocery shopping, taking care of elderly parents, walking dogs, and helping out with homework. Or it can be offering your professional expertise, business service, health services or counseling. The kinds of services people share in the Time Bank depend entirely on what you have to offer.
