Mom's Pregnancy Support Groups

Mamas have been asking us for pregnancy support groups. Here's one that is up and coming

EXPECTATIONS: A GROUP FOR PREGNANT WOMEN

This group will explore the emotional experience of pregnancy in a supportive environment. Topics will include how to improve your support network, stress management, positive childbirth experience, and self-care. Other topics will be generated together by group members and the facilitator.

Some attention will be given to strategies to improve emotional health during the postpartum period.

The group begins Wednesday April 2, and will run for 6 sessions. Each session is 1 ½ Hours from 5:45pm-7:15pm. Fees are on a sliding scale from $15-$25/session.

This group is an inclusive group, and is affirming of all ages, cultural/ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation and relationship status.

binkied baby smell -- but the fresh, warm, earthy smell of a new life
emerging from the salty depths of mystery.

Getting in touch with the wild lands of our souls is often what is so
surprising and inspiring about birth--truly nothing can prepare us for the
moment that we meet the new being that lands in our arms. We are forever
changed. Transformed. We are ourselves born as mothers. Born as fathers.

And so a new year is born--our wildest dreams come alive...the potential of
new our new life emerges. A chance to start anew. We invite you to come

Mother Tree Family - Nanny Share Available

We are three families looking for another family to join in our nanny
share. We currently have 2 kids everyday except Wednesday when there
are three. We would love someone for M, T, Th and F but we could work
with someone who needs all 5 days. We have a 16 month old girl, a 11
month old boy, and a 8 month old boy. We would love to have someone
16 months or a little older.

Our kids spend as much time as possible outdoors. They eat healthy,
mostly organic food. They don't watch TV. We would like someone
interested in meeting occasionally with all the parents, kids and
nanny to talk about the little ones and to just relax and catch up.

The Business of Being Born Viewing Invite

UrbanMamas, Activistas, Mother Tree and the Zenana Spa and Wellness Center are sponsoring a screening of The Business of Being Born.

The Business of Being Born created and produced by Ricki Lake is an honest look at the affects that business and corporate structures have on women and their families, their choices and the community.

And of course there'll be an opportunity afterward to discuss the film and, hopefully, brainstorm ideas for next steps, if that makes sense. We'll definitely be discussing the film - and anything related - with some expert input. We've all got birth opinions, I just know it. Bring 'em with you.

Planning to come? Excellent! We'll be at Zenana Spa on Saturday, 1.26.08 @ 3 PM and again on Sunday 2.10.08 @ 12:30 PM (it's 85 minutes long). The cost is $5/person; all proceeds will be donated to the Nursing Mothers Counsel of Oregon (a big thanks to urbanMamas for paying for the film and Zenana for donating the space!). And if you wish to donate more, no one will stop you!

THE LANGUAGE OF PARENTING~WORDS WEAVE MAGIC!

Part of raising capable, confident children is mastering the artful use of language. This five-week class series gives parents new tools for using language to gain cooperation and enhance self-esteem. Janet Allison is a Parent Educator, Waldorf Teacher and Family Coach. Class begins Monday, November 12th through December 10th, 7-9 p.m. at the Historic Overlook House. $125 includes manual. I am teaching another Craniosacral Therapy for Infants workshop
October 1-5 in Portland. I am looking for babies whose parents would
like their children to receive a Craniosacral Therapy Treatment
during the workshop. The parents will pay nothing for the treatments
their children receive in class. We need babies, ideally under six
months (the younger the better), whose parents would like them to be
treated by me during a class demonstration. We will also need babies
whose parents would like them to be treated by students under my
supervision. You probably already know babies who would benefit from
CST treatment. Please forward my contact information to their
parents. Or forward their contact information to me (after you talk
to them). This is a great way for parents to get excellent treatment
for their babies at no charge.

When we were little, our moms got lame advice like “don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys.” They also drank beer while nursing, laid us face-down on plastic-covered mattresses, hired teenage babysitters with loose morals just because they lived down the block, and strapped us into little seats with elastic cables that hung from a doorway, and allowed us to bounce up and down for (apparently danger-filled) hours on end.

Infant Observation Training Seek Expectant Parents For Mom-Baby Relations Study

A Mother Tree mama and trusted pediatrician sent along this notice from a colleague of hers who is a psychologist and works primarily with 0-3 year olds. She is doing an Infant Observation training for students to learn more about infant-mom relationships. She is seeking currently pregnant families or newborn families.

The requirement: anyone who would be willing to be observed with their newborn weekly for a year so that students in the field could learn about infant-mom relationships.

The following is her description of the training:
“Infant Observation is a course of training developed at Tavistok Institute in England, as a training for child therapists. The clinician would like to meet with expectant parents a bit before the due date of their baby and get to know them. This would be a time for all concerned to see how it felt and if it seemed like the family would feel comfortable meeting with that person. Following the baby’s delivery, the family would set up a regular time to meet with the parent(s) and the baby once a week for one hour. The visitor’s role is just to be there, to observe the baby, hear how things have been. Many families find this presence very supportive. The observation continues during baby’s first year. The observation gives the clinician an opportunity to have an up close experience of early development and to really think about what our earliest relationships give us.

Mother Tree Doula Services offers a DONA Approved Doula Training. Founder Jesse Remer Henderson recently completed the Trainer Certification and was accepted by DONA International to become one of just over a hundred trainers internationally.
