Pain Coping Techniques
The laboring woman is more than just a physical
body of activity. She is an emotional and spiritual being as well. To
assist in her accessing her own Mother Nature, supporting the whole woman
is necessary for labor to unfold and for a woman to feel well cared for
on the journey.
In addition to physical comfort measures, other pain coping techniques
can be offered. Within the doula or support person’s protocol these
include deep relaxation, visualization, vocalization, imagery, music therapy,
affirmations and more.
Facing your Fears
In pregnancy some fears are justifiable, we often fear the unknown. It
is easy to feel intimidate by the process. Identify what it is you fear,
become informed and take action. When you discover what you want and work
to create it your worry will diminish.
Everyone has some fear about birth. Being aware of your fears and expressing
them allows you to transform them. Make an affirmation out of your fears,
allowing you to act as if you have conquered this fear.
The fear of pain can be overwhelming. Gently explore your ideal image
of coping with pain. What are you doing…what are you feeling…what
do you need from others. How will you cope with pain?
Pain and stress is normal in labor it is part of the natural process helping
your baby to arrive.
