Pain Coping Techniques

The pain of labor is different for every woman, a part of her unique journey. A woman's environment, body, and mind all contribute to her perception of pain and decisions about the medication in childbirth. In the absense of other medical conditions, labor pain is considered purposeful, anticipatory, intermittent and normal. To understand how to anticipate the pain of labor and how best to cope, a woman must first understand why labor pain occurs, what can increase the pain and what can decrease the perception of pain. She then can build upon the strengths of her own life experience and personal coping techniquest to build her support system. These techniques can include breath awareness, patterned breathing, deep relaxation, massage, labor positioning, acupressure and hydrotherapy.
